RBOB Gasoline Blog

RBOB is the U.S. benchmark for wholesale gasoline, the NYMEX contract that fuel prices are set against, and it moves every day with crude, refining, and the summer driving season. RBOB (Reformulated Blendstock for Oxygenate Blending) is a gasoline blendstock designed to meet stricter environmental regulations. Commonly used in metropolitan areas, it reduces pollution by eliminating volatile hydrocarbons and blending with ethanol to meet clean fuel standards. This formulation helps reduce urban air pollution, addressing challenges associated with dense vehicle traffic.

What makes RBOB unique?

RBOB is engineered to minimize emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants that contribute to smog. It undergoes advanced refining processes to eliminate components prone to evaporation, ensuring lower emissions during storage and use. Once transported, RBOB is blended with ethanol to meet the Clean Air Act requirements in the U.S.

RBOB gasoline in 2026

RBOB is priced as a NYMEX futures contract of 42,000 gallons, settled against New York Harbor, and it is the reference refiners, distributors, and fleets use to hedge gasoline. Through mid-2026 RBOB traded in the low $3 per gallon range, near $3.39 in mid-July, up sharply from a year earlier and within a 52 week span that ran from about $1.68 to $3.76.

Two forces set the tone. Summer grade gasoline and peak driving demand lift prices into the warm months, while crude did the rest as Middle East tension moved oil through the first half of the year. Refining margins on gasoline stayed firm alongside diesel.

For Mexico this is the market that matters most. Mexico is the largest buyer of U.S. gasoline, taking about 486,000 barrels per day in 2025, more than half of all U.S. gasoline exports. Most of it moves from the Gulf Coast, so the landed cost for a Mexican importer tracks RBOB plus regional differentials.

Price factors and future outlook

RBOB’s price is influenced by its higher production and transportation costs compared to conventional gasoline. Seasonal demand spikes, particularly in summer, also impact prices as stricter emission regulations come into effect. Crude oil costs, ethanol policies, and global fuel demand further shape its market value.

With ongoing environmental regulations, RBOB remains crucial for urban markets. However, the rise of electric vehicles and alternative energy sources may gradually reduce its demand in the long term.
